How to Make a Tri Panel Locking Card

Feb 26, 2026 | Fun Folds

Sometimes the most meaningful cards are the hardest ones to create. A sympathy card carries weight. It carries love. It carries presence when words feel inadequate.

This Tri Panel Locking Card is a beautiful way to express heartfelt condolences with a little extra thoughtfulness. As a fun fold technique, the tri panel locking card adds gentle dimension and interest without feeling complicated or flashy — which makes it especially appropriate for a sympathy occasion.

This card is perfect for anyone walking through loss — a friend, neighbor, church family member, or longtime acquaintance. The soft floral Lovely Blossoms Designer Series Paper and layered sentiment create a peaceful, comforting tone. What makes this design special is the locking tag into the front panel that opens into a graceful three-panel display, offering space for a handwritten message and an additional decorative focal point inside.

It’s the kind of card someone may quietly place on their mantel and keep for weeks. And that matters.

If you’ve ever wondered how to make a Tri Panel Locking Card that feels elegant yet simple, you’re in the right place.

Why You’ll Love This Tri Panel Locking Card

  • Unique fun fold without being complicated
  • Elegant enough for sympathy or encouragement
  • Showcases Designer Series Paper beautifully
  • Stands up for display
  • Plenty of space for a heartfelt handwritten message

The Star of the Show

This fold is called a Tri Panel Locking Card because when the tag comes through the front panel it “locks” the card closed — then unfolds into three beautifully balanced sections inside when opened.

Supplies Needed:

STAMPS – Lovely Arrangements (side flower stamp), retired-Heartfelt Hexagon (sympathy sentiment)

PAPERS

  • Basic White, Secret Sea Cardstock
  • Lovely Blooms 12” x 12” Designer Series Paper (DSP)
  • Basic White Medium Envelope

PUNCH – Heartfelt Hexagon

INK – Cloud Cover, Secret Sea

EMBELLISHMENTS – Moody Palette Glossy Dots (3 Cloud Cover)

TOOLS – Paper Trimmer, Clear Stamp block D, Stampin’ Bone Folder, Seal Adhesive, Dimensionals, Take Your Pick Tool, Scissors, Simply Shammy.

NON STAMPIN’ UP! PRODUCT – Glitter Glue from Amazon with extra tip and stainless-steel pin

Cutting Directions:

  • 12” x 12” Basic White Base – cut at 5 ½” X 12”, score at 4” and 8” (Substitution would be 1 sheet of 8 ½” x 11”, with ½” cut off long side, then cut across short side at 5 ½”. Score each piece at 4”. Then overlap and adhere the two pieces to create the three-panel card base.)
  • Lovely Blooms Designer Series Paper – Floral sheet cut 3 pieces 3 ¾”x 5 ¼”. Blue striped sheet cut 1 piece 3 ¾”x 5 ¼”. Small Floral panel DSP is 3” x 4” but trim down to 2 ¾” x 3 ¾”. Crumb Cake small flowers design punch one hexagon. Scraps to decorate the inner left side panel.
  • Secret Sea cardstock – cut 3” x 4”
  • Basic White Cardstock – Inside center back layer 3 ¼” x 4 ¾”
  • Made with Love DSP – Envelope Flap – 2 ¼” x 6”

Step by Step Assembly:

  • Prepare and score Basic White card base.
  • Take one of the floral 3 ¾”x 5 ¼” panels and use glitter glue to adhere just around the edges, do not put any glue in the middle of the front panel.
  • Adhere the other DSP pieces to their respective panels as shown in the included photos.
  • With the Heartfelt Hexagon punch, center the punch from the top of the front panel until you touch the end of punch, then center it left and right. Punch through both layers. Save the Basic White punched piece and put the floral piece back with the DSP package.
  • Stamp the Crumb Cake floral punched piece with the sympathy sentiment using Secret Sea ink. With the side flower stamp use Cloud Cover ink to stamp a partial image at the top and bottom of the punched tag. With the Glitter Glue adhere both punched tags together aligning edges carefully. Add Dimensionals to the back of the tag and peel off protective coverings of the Dimensionals.
  • To affix the tag, open the front panel of the card on the table surface and align the tag face down (with words reading correctly) in the punched out “hole”. Hold the front panel so it won’t move and gently close the other panels over the tag and press closed. The result should be the “locking mechanism” when the card front is opened again.
  • With the Basic White inner layer, stamp the side flower in Cloud Cover ink in the lower right corner. Affix to the DSP backing.
  • On the right inner panel, adhere the flower image to the Secret Sea layer and adhere to the striped DSP.
  • Affix 3 embellishment gems to the front tag with the Take Your Pick tool.
  • Adhere the DSP to the envelope flap and trim with scissors. Also stamp with side flower in Cloud Cover ink in the lower left corner of the envelope front.

Other Variations of this Fun Fold

Top Row: What a difference a small change can made, in this case the position of the punch. By lowering the punch location, a stamped flower of Secret Sea ink on Cloud Cover cardstock, then die cut out, adds a little extra pizzazz! Plus depending on which prepared image from the DSP you choose for the inner right panel, that can make a world of difference too!

Middle Row: Something as simple as selecting a different sheet of the DSP can change the card’s look altogether. The stamp set I used was retired Country Flowers.

Bottom Row: I discovered attaching the flower image over the locking tag, wasn’t a great idea, since the tag couldn’t rise above the hexagon shape, but I still like the look of it. Another fun thing to do is stamp the envelope flap and the front left lower corner of the envelope. In this case I used the leaf stamp and Cloud Cover ink. Here’s another little secret, only stamp part of the leaf on the front so it appears unique and doesn’t take up too much space on the front.
